NEO SOUL

Need modern food to feed your soul? A new take on soul food is here. Neo Soul is a genre that emerged not that long ago. This neo soul, or some name it, Nu Soul, came from the late 1990s as a hybrid of 70s soul music and the classic contemporary R & B, but with influences from many genres like hip hop, house music, funk, gospel and many jazz elements. It’s a modern-day soul music, with modern attitudes and sensibilities.

The term is believed to have originated with Kedar Massenburg of Motown Records back in the late 1990s, but actually it first came from Tony!Toni!Tone! in the mid 1990s. Neo soul also got a lot of influence from the acid jazz movement in UK. Neo soul is sometimes looked upon with disdain as nothing more than a marketing specialization of contemporary R & B instead of an honest revival of soul music. This is because most of the people who record in the genre and listen to it tend to be anti-mainstream preferring that the music favor underground credibility and soulfulness over mainstream popularity.

Many famous names are known pouring their creativities under this genre, despite the fact that most of them never want to be associated with the genre. Jill Scott, Maxwell, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, Corinne Bailey Rae, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Angela Johnson, Rahsaan Paterson, Macy Gray,India Arie,Lauryn Hill and many more.
